Evolving into a nocturnal generation?

Have you ever known two people who are very similar; traits, habits, personality, character, behaviors - who will complain about each other to you? All the while you sit there wondering to yourself how long into their rant will it take before it dawns on them that they are guilty of doing the very same thing that they’re complaining about. But the dawning realization never comes.
How can people be so completely unaware of themselves and their own flaws and actions?
I think I am extremely self-aware. I am aware that I can be considered selfish, lazy, weird, moody or just plain rude. I am aware of the actions that cause these behaviors to be labeled at me. Doesn’t mean that I can necessarily change it, or even care to try. But I do have an awareness of my flaws and traits.
I know when I’m being absurdly hormonal. I know when I’m unreasonably agitated towards everyone. Can’t stop it, but I can at least admit beneath my PMS tears - ‘sorry, ignore me, I’m just hormonal’. I am aware that I may disappoint friends because I’m ‘not there’ for them, but I am at least attentive of my selfish isolation, and can acknowledge my symptom of depression.
I begin trying to analyze my own traits; regardless of how receptive I may think I am… surely, there must be some that I am BLIND to! Because I’m sure that as anyone reads this, they too will be thinking to themselves ‘well I don’t do that’. Makes me ponder… what parts of myself am I blind to?

- Showing my gratitude for the pill heads -

Let’s spend a moment in the life of a low-income citizen with no medical insurance:
I need the stimulant drug called Adderall, as treatment for a neurological sleep disorder.  Adderall is abused by many non-patients, acquired through non-medical methods, and taken for leisure purposes. Thus, the federal regulations that have been set upon this drug calls for:
a patient that needs it to obtain a brand new prescription to be written by the doctor every month.
The pharmacist can’t call and ask for a refill.
The doctor can’t call the refill into the pharmacist.
You have to physically go to your doctor’s office, - pay for the visit out of pocket, - take the prescription slip to the pharmacist - and pay out of pocket for the drug.
All of this extra time and $money$ spent every month just to get my medicine. Let me reiterate that I’m low-income, with no health insurance. So instead of one doctor visit every 6 to 12 months to check-up on my medicine needs, I have to go to one every month. Expensive. I am nowhere close to being able to afford doing this. Therefore I just have to be without my medicine.
In short, - due to abusers, my drugs have regulations. - Due to the regulations, I can’t afford to get the drugs I need to function.
So, thank you so very much for leisurely taking pills just to get a quick high; ruining it for those of us who really actually need them.

NARCOLEPSY OR NOCTURNAL?
Most people think being nocturnal is either a choice or the result of insomnia. It is neither. Nocturnal people stay up all night because that’s their body’s natural rhythm.
It’s true that some people choose to stay up late and sleep in. However, most night owls would prefer to sleep when everyone else does. Being nocturnal hinders the ability
It’s also true that insomniacs are often up all night. The difference is that insomnia is short term and treatable. Being nocturnal is not. Rather, it’s a natural state of being.
— The Circadian Rhythm —
All living things have an internal clock called the circadian rhythm, which runs on a 24-hour cycle. The circadian rhythm tells plants when to unfold their leaves. It tells humans and animals when to wake and when to eat. When isolated from external sources, such as light, the circadian rhythm can change an hour one way or the other, but most often stays the same.
The circadian rhythm tells most animals and human beings to wake in the morning and sleep at night, but there are exceptions. Some species of owls, for instance, have a night rhythm rather than a day rhythm. That’s why nocturnal humans are referred to as night owls.
In some humans, the internal clock runs on a night rhythm. That doesn’t mean they have a sleep disorder or an illness. It is simply their natural rhythm. Even if they haven’t slept, their internal clock tells their bodies to wake up once night falls. They are more alert and active at night. They are more apt to be hungry at night rather than in the daytime. In fact, most nocturnals’ sleeping and eating schedules are the exact opposite of the day person.

And most of society are completly ignorant about it. They call us lazy, evil, drug addicts and so forth. Doctors prescribe us “medicine” thats supposed to help us, afterall they think it’s a sickness and we can change our rythm if we just wanted to.

The truth is most of us tried really hard to change it, but it doesn’t work. Trying to live like “day people” only makes us sick. We feel like sleepwalking zombies if we have to get up in the morning. We never reach our full potential till the sun goes down. Personally im most active at around 10pm till 5am.
This ignorance leads to lots of unneeded problems for us. We can get bad grades in school, can’t have all the jobs others can have, etc.

To be diagnosed with narcolepsy is both a terrible and a wonderful event. On one hand, you have just been told you have a rare illness that you have likely never heard of before and know very little about. On the other hand, it is a great relief to finally be told you’re not crazy or lazy or any of the other things people have labelled you your whole life. There is usually a period of grief when realising that this problem is a life-long illness that won’t be going away, but there is a great freedom in accepting the illness and learning how to make the most of your life within the limitations it places on you.
When I was very young, in grade one, my teacher called my mother, concerned because I fell asleep in class almost every day. Although it was considered strange, it was decided that nothing should be done about it as I was not disrupting the class and my grades did not suffer from my naps. It just became known that I would fall asleep on my desk and would wake up later with no harm done.
In high school, I was always very sleepy. Teachers would comment that I was too quiet and didn’t participate in class. Truthfully, I was not listening to them for a good chunk of the time, because I was trying to read ahead in my book and get ahead of class so I could have some quiet time at my desk toward the end of class. Again, I was an excellent student that did not cause trouble, so most of my teachers accepted this. However, I was often seen looking like a zombie and was very frustrated by teachers and fellow students that told me to “just smile”. They couldn’t understand the weight of the sleepiness I was experiencing. Toward the end of high school I was sent home from school several times because I would burst into tears when anyone would suggest I wasn’t trying hard enough. I was frustrated and angry that nobody could understand that I was doing my best, and that my sleepiness was beyond my control.
After high school I had several jobs, all of them ending due to my sleepiness. The first lasted six weeks, another lasted two weeks, and my record for holding down a job is four years. However, the four-year job was hellish for me, as I was constantly being berated for making errors, falling asleep at my desk, and sleeping through business meetings. Eventually I started doing research on the internet and contacted a sleep specialist, who said it my symptoms sounded like textbook narcolepsy.
Having a name for my problem and some science to back it up was wonderful. I thought if I showed my employers that this is real and explained how it works, that they might accept it and accommodate me with naps and different work hours so I could perform my job better. To my dismay, they didn’t believe me. In their minds, since they had never heard of this disease, they could make up their own rules about how it should be handled. One insisted that I should just drink coffee all day. The other tried to give me some pills she was selling through an MLM scheme, because she truly believed they were capable of curing any ailment (including cancer and HIV). Eventually they fired me from my job, but I was happy to leave these people that were only putting me down and making me ill with their unreasonable demands and forced sleep deprivation.
As I told my friends about narcolepsy, some of them tried to offer a magic cure for the disease. Caffeine, peppermint tea, an exercise routine, vitamins and herbal supplements, organic foods. It is human nature to want to cure a loved one of their disease with a wave of a magic wand, but it is misguided when the person giving advice does not actually understand the cause of the disease. If you are a friend or family member trying to provide support, the best way to help is just to listen, and your loved one will tell you if there is any way they would like you to help out (offering rides when they cannot drive, for example). Pushing the latest fad remedy on them is only going to make them shy away because they don’t feel that you understand what they are going through.
Sometimes families and the patients themselves are uncomfortable with the idea of taking stimulants just to stay awake long enough to go to work or school. When cataplexy is treated with antidepressants, there is the stigma of mental illness added to the problem. Some people think having to take an antidepressant means you must be “crazy”, and nothing could be farther from the truth. Whether such a drug is taken for depression or for cataplexy, it is merely a treatment for a chemical imbalance in the brain, just like insulin is a treatment for high blood sugar in diabetics. It is a necessity for living.
Once the narcoleptic has accepted the illness, there is still a constant barrage of magic cures being thrust upon her. Many people are absolutely convinced that homeopathy can cure narcolepsy. However, these well-meaning people do not see that narcolepsy is a neurological disease that currently cannot be cured, only treated to improve the quality of life. Some things may be curable with homeopathic remedies or eating specific foods. However, narcolepsy is a neurological abnormality. You can’t cure Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis or other such diseases with homeopathy. Just because narcolepsy doesn’t appear to be as debilitating does not mean it is any less a physical ailment. It was discovered in 2001 that narcoleptics patients lack a certain type of cells in the brain. These cells produce a chemical called orexin or hypocretin that are secreted during the day to keep you awake. Without the brain secreting this chemical, the narcoleptic experiences the extreme and uncontrollable urge to sleep. Doctors are examining this chemical in hopes that maybe it can be taken in pill or injection form to keep narcoleptics awake, but currently that science is in its infancy and is years away from being available as a treatment or cure for narcolepsy.
The current standard treatment for narcolepsy is stimulants to combat sleepiness, and antidepressants for cataplexy. Stimulants may be amphetamines or a new non-amphetamine drug called Modfinil (Alertec). Antidepressants tend to be in the SSRI class, although exactly how they prevent cataplexy is still unknown. Even with drugs, it is important to allow yourself scheduled naps if you feel they are necessary. When your body is screaming at you to stop and lie down, you need to listen! Family and friends need to be sensitive to this and not try to tell the narcoleptic person to just ignore it. I have read an estimate by a sleep specialist that the sleepiness of a narcoleptic person is equivalent to a normal person who has not slept in 40 hours. In this state, it is impossible to function and you MUST rest or risk injury and errors in whatever task you are trying to perform. Driving is especially dangerous in this state, so I frequently pull over to the side of the road or into a parking lot and sleep for an hour before continuing. It is not worth risking your safety to be somewhere at a specific time. For me, it took falling asleep at the wheel and hitting another car to understand that.
Diet also plays a role in wakefulness, although it is not the be-all-and-end-all. Every narcoleptic is different and has different triggers for sleepiness. However, there are many foods that commonly make people sleepy and they can be avoided or eaten at night when it is appropriate to be sleepy. Milk and bread are probably the most commonly sleep-inducing foods. Pasta puts me to sleep in minutes. I have also heard reports of peanut butter and bananas causing sleepiness. Generally, eating protein-rich foods such as meat and eggs for breakfast and lunch and avoiding dairy and a lot of starch during the day helps you stay more alert and reduces the need for naps. Personally, I avoid caffeine and refined sugar, as they may cause a surge in energy for a short period of time, but when the effects wear off I feel extremely drowsy and have to sleep. If I need to drive a long distance, I will drive until I start to feel tired, then pull over for a nap and/or a cup of coffee before continuing. I especially avoid caffeine after 3PM unless absolutely necessary for driving, as caffeine late in the day disrupts my sleep and results in me losing most of the following day to sleep.

I’ve been having dreams lately about a superior race of beings taking over our world. They seem to simultaneously ‘test’ every living planet in every solar system in every universe. Most fail this test.
In these dreams, I have experienced scavaging for food, stealing a towel in order to clothe a baby that I began taking care of. Learning new ways of communicating with the very few other surviving humans on our desolate planet - knowing that the alien race will strike down upon that location if we make any wrong move to announce our existence.
Every little broken piece of anything is stealthly taken to creatively be used for something else that is needed. It is very dark, pretty much always. And cold. Water is a luxury. If you are found harboring any water, the other humans will not hesitate to kill you for it.
In my other dreams of this superior race, I was able to figure out how to ‘pass’ the aliens test. I ran around to my loved ones, demanding that we must act basically the opposite of what we initially would think to do, in order to survive the test. Huge lazor-like beams were seen sporadically jetting down from an invisiable sky and desinegrating people where they stood. People sat atop buildings, believing if they got as close to the beings as they could - then they might be favored. But they too were incinerated. The test causes chaos through out every inch of our planet. Yet, is done so very quickly. The majority of society gone. A stray lazor beam striking down in the distance once in awhile to oblierate stragglers it may have missed the first time around.
My group of loved ones and myself were transported onto the alien vessel, since we few humans had passed their test. We were given small rooms to share with each other, with one small common area with beverages and snack as if it was some sort of office break-room. We were taught things from the aliens. We were treated almost as pets to them. They were not mean to us, but almost parent-like - teaching us as if we were children.
I never got to even see this superior race. I remember looking in their general direction, but there was no physical form to portray their appearance. We just knew when they were there and when they weren’t.
I have never held any stock in this whole “2012” hoopla. Not to discredit the profits. But more as a discredit to our own interpretations of the profits. And if something did happen in 2012, it would be of our own destruction. War. Missiles. Nuclear Bombs. Or maybe for religious believers it would be the return of their savior.
But why do I keep having these types of dreams? Perhaps it won’t be us that destroy each other. Perhaps it won’t be a return of Christ to judge the bad from the good. Maybe it is this alien race that is the higher power that most humans feel is present somewhere out there (that we call God). Maybe they are the one’s who will be returning to place judgement and give us our final test. Maybe they’ve been watching over all along. Or maybe they are just a race of power-hungry beings who are bent in ruling the universe. Who knows. I certainly don’t. All I do know is that I’m having these post-apocalyptic type dreams almost nightly.

- 2012 -

- THE FUTURE IS HERE -
In 1939 an invention was made available to the general public. This invention is still available to us even today. I am wondering however if perhaps the knowledge of this invention has been kept on the down-low all these years, because so many people have access to this invention on a daily basis and yet do not use it to its full potential, or at all…
The invention of which I speak is this clever device attached to every single motor vehicle called a turning signal, or as some call it: a blinker. This dandy instrument displays a blinking light at the back of your vehicle to give notification to the motorists around you. You can use this ingenious device if you’re about to make a turn or about to change lanes. It also provides an option to display caution lights, or as some call it: four-ways, in case you are experiencing car problems or need to pull over for some other reason.
Intelligent little invention isn’t it? So, I can’t help but wonder why such a large portion of society doesn’t use it. Particularly with an ever-expanding population of motorists; the roads are becoming more and more cluttered by the day. So, to prevent confusion and thus fender-benders or worse… why not use your blinker? And this doesn’t mean turn it on while you’re already in the midst of making your maneuver, that’s just pointless. It’s about notification! Giving your fellow motorists notice that you are about to deploy your next action or a new movement. Therefore, your turning signal should be activated at least a few seconds (if not more) prior to the actual execution of your intended move.
In summary, if you have been kept out of the loop about this fantastic invention, then this blog is to inform you of its existence and its handy usefulness. If you are someone who did know of its existence, but perhaps simply aren’t intelligent enough to figure out how to adequately use it- then hopefully this blog has spread some light on the correct usage of it.
Thank you for your time.

- BONDING WITH A DREAM -
I don’t quite have the hang of this thing yet….
Ever have one of those dreams that seem to last pretty much the entire length of your slumber? A continuing story line that goes on all night? And it’s lucid and vivid? You feel as if you’re really there? I’m sure you all have answered yes so far. But, how about, within one of these types of dreams - you are with someone, whether you’re running from something together, or are in cohorts with each other during some sort of adventure - but this person is a stranger to your conscious mind. In the awake world, you have never met this person. But in the dream you seem to have a special bond?
You wake up and through out the rest of your day, you keep getting these waves of remembrance of the dream and that person. And within these fleeting ‘memories’ you find a longing for that dream stranger. As if that bond you shared within the dream should have transferred to the awake world along with you. As if you should be able to call them up and exchange stories. And it’s a bit saddening when you realize that you don’t actually know that person.
Strange, I know.
